These Ansar (Helpers) from Madina accepted Islam and pledged loyalty (gave their bay’a) at the hands of the beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, at Aqaba on the outskirts of Makkah in the year 2 B.H/620 C.E. A year earlier, the first five of them together with Sayyidina Jabir ibn Abdillah al-Khazraji had accepted Islam at Aqaba and pledged their loyalty at the hands of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

Those who accepted Islam were persecuted by the polytheists of Makkah. To escape this persecution, the beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, advised the Muslims to migrate to al-Habash (Abyssinia, which is now called Ethiopia). This migration took place in the fifth year of the mission of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. As-Saabiqun al-Awwalun are the first and the foremost sahaba (companions) who believed in the message of Islam brought by Prophet Muhammad, those who made the first hijra (migration) to al-Habash (Abyssinia, now Ethiopia), those among the Ansar (Helpers from Madina) who pledged their loyalty to Prophet Muhammad at Aqaba, the first and the second time, and those who migrated to Madina prior to Prophet Muhammad, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him.
