The birth of the Prophet Muhammad, the Pride of Humanity, peace and blessings be upon him, can be seen in the light of being the re-birth of all humanity. Until the day the Prophet honored this world, it was not possible to discern good from evil, day from night, or the rose from the thorn. It was as if the world was the abode of universal mourning, and the cosmos was lost in chaos. Thanks to the light he cast upon existence, darkness parted from light, night suffused into day, and the universe was transformed into a book that was now legible, word by word, phrase by phrase, section by section . . the entire cosmos had in a sense undergone a revival and had nearly attained its true value. |

Although we were not fortunate to be blessed to be alive during the life time of Prophet Muhammad (sa), and therefore unable to see him, or taste his presence, we are able to get a fragrant glimpse of his physical description and characteristics that were preserved by the companions and passed down to us by the great scholars of Islam. The best description of Prophet Muhammad (sa) was given by Lady Ayesha when she was asked to describe the Prophet (sa). She said, “His example and character were those of the Koran.” And so it is that he was and is and will be forever, our best living, exemplary model. |

It was now the eleventh year since the migration and during the month of Safar the Prophet (sa) decided it was time to settle the unfinished matter at Mutah, in which a legion of the Roman army had joined the northern Syrian Arabs against the Muslims. Despite his youthfulness, the Prophet (sa) appointed Osama, the son of the martyred Zayd, to command the three-thousand strong army of Muslims against the northern tribes. |

A few months before the pilgrimage, the Prophet (sa) received cordial letters from Yemen. He sent a contingent of three hundred men to collect the obligatory charity due at the end of Ramadan from the Muslims together with the poll tax levied upon those who had not converted but were protected by Muslims. |
